The Lomax Project

An amazing new project is launching today. Focusing on songs collected by field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, this "collaboratory" brings together some of North America's most distinctive and creative roots musicians to re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes African-American a cappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, Bahamian sea shanties, Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and work songs. The album will feature Grammy winning songster Tim O'Brien, Bruce Molsky, Brittany Haas, Moira Smiley, Margaret Glaspy, Greg Garrison, Julian Lage and more. 

The Lomax Project transforms performing arts centres, theatres and festivals into creative hubs where eminent musicians gather to explore their roots, create new music and celebrate their collective cultural heritage. They offer educational programs, outreach activities and residencies for K-12 schools, universities and the general public and will be at Tufts University, Purdue University, Berklee College of Music and others next season. A full-length album is in the works and will be out in March 2015.
