Detroit band Jackie Stahl & The White Russians is the project of
veteran musician Matthew Stahl aka Jackie, whose vast work includes
playing drums in the bands The Blue Collar Boys, Catfish Mafia, Bixy
Lutz, and Jennifer Westwood & The Waycross Georgia Farmboys, just to
name a few.
The White Russians play what they describe as "Dirty Americana" music, influenced by Detroit rock, country, blues, jazz, and soul. Stahl's various musical influences range from local folk hero, guitarist Rodriguez to the classic sound of composer Burt Bacharach, the blues stomp of The Black Keys, jazz legend Miles Davis and troubadour Tom Waits.
After learning to play the piano Stahl began writing and recording songs in his home studio. He assembled a band of his musical colleagues to become his backing band, The White Russians. He has since released two albums; one of original songs “Jackie Does Love” in 2013 and a 6-song covers EP “Used” in 2015.
Both works received airplay nationwide and also accolades from the music press in his hometown. Writer Eric Harabadian from Detroit Live Mag said in his review, “It's kind of got a retro vibe to it, with it's liberal splashes of vintage soul and rock. Stahl delivers a full album's worth of original songs, with an earthy Tom Waits meets Wilson Pickett aesthetic. The band's demeanor is laid back and the vocals are slightly off key, but the fragility or perceived pathos adds to the authenticity of the material. Select tracks like "Girlfriend" and "Refrain" make a strong impression, with their indelible hooks and insistent rhythms. There's even a shred of New Orleans style Dr. John at work via Stahl's piano and organ combo. Well worth a listen for those that like their tunes with a little bit of grit.”
His third album “Time” features some of Detroit's finest musicians accompanying him in the studio, including Josh Ford (bass), Jason Charboneau and Greg Hanson (guitar), Todd Glass (drums), Jarrod Champion (Hammond Organ), Bernard Staples (harmonica), Ivan Fargo (additional vocals) and Kevin Beattie (whistle). All the songs were written by Stahl who also produced the album along with engineer Josh Ford. Stahl enjoyed the process of writing and recording his latest endeavor, “"Time" is a continuation of our debut record "Jackie Does Love". These songs were inspired by real life experience and my desire to make the type of music I want to hear. In a tidal wave of candy coated and sterilized mainstream, I suggest you "stick that in your waffle cone and give it a lick".
